What is ICD?

Impulse control disorder is characterized as a group of medical disorders in which the patient is incapable of resisting the impulse to perform an act.

Impulse Control Disorder is defined as a problem with control of behavior and emotions and can lead to harming others and oneself. ICD forms include IED, Kleptomaniac, and Pyromaniac.

Symptoms

Explosive Outbursts: It is characterized by impulsive, outbursts of anger or a tendency towards violence with little provocation.

Compulsive Stealing (Kleptomania): Develop a mental inability to overcome the temptation to steal something or any other irrelevant object.

Setting Fires (Pyromania): Repeated intentional burning of any structure or property that is not accidental.

Excessive Gambling or Shopping: Deliberate actions that entail gambling or any other behavior that involves promoting expenditure on specific commodities without thinking about the consequences.

Risky Sexual Behaviors: Promiscuous behaviors involving carelessly doing sexually related activities.

Inability to Resist Harmful Impulses: Inability to resist performing activities that may result in undesirable outcomes or experiencing overwhelming drives to perform these activities.

Causes

Genetic Predisposition: There is evidence that gets intensively inherited where there have been past experiences of ICD or other mental health disorders.

Neurological Factors: Abnormal chemical differences inside the brain and hormones such as serotonin, and dopamine are also known to be causal factors of ICD.

Environmental Influences: Several factors cause ICD, but the most apparent is having faced stressful or traumatic circumstances that render the kid helpless, especially at an early age.

Psychological Factors: Functional disorders may be associated with basic psychiatric diseases like anxiety, depression, certain personality disorders, and so on.

Our Approach

At Florida Addictions Rehab, we make sure that every program we have is patient-tailored. The strategy includes using the best practices supported by the research and developing an individualized treatment plan suitable for the client. We want to assist you in learning how to establish more appropriate methods of coping and regain command over your urge to act out.

Treatment Options

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): A systematic and intentional type of therapy that seeks to assist a person in eliminating undesirable ideas and conduct within a given framework. CBT aims at identifying the individual’s learning history to develop strategies for interfering with excessive impulses and diminishing the force and occurrence of the impulses.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): A dialectical behavior therapy that uses some elements such as mindfulness, regulation of mood as well as endurance of a stressful state.

Medication Management: Specific drugs like SSRI or mood stabilizers can be prescribed to help regulate the dysphoria. When it comes to antioxidants, our medical practitioners provide critical supervision and dosages for optimal results.

Support Groups: Self-help groups work because they allow individuals in need help to interact with other people who are also experiencing or have experienced the same ordeal. Group discussion may help reduce feelings of isolation since individuals can share their complaints with other patients.

Family Therapy: Family members can also play a significant role in the treatment, and their participation may be necessary for the recovery. Family therapy sessions will be centered around enhancing the communication, and ICD understanding, as well as identifying instrumentality in supporting the person with ICD.
